On
the occasion of the company's 75th anniversary in the summer of 1999,
Koelnmesse joined with the University of Cologne to found the Institute of
Trade Fair Management and Distribution Research. Affiliated with the Faculty of
Management, Economics and Social Sciences, the Institute is headed by
Professors Dr. Dr. h.c. Werner Delfmann and Dr. Karen Gedenk. Koelnmesse GmbH
underwrites the Institute's financing through Koelnmesse Foundation, likewise
established in 1999.
Academic
training at the Institute for Trade Fair Management and Distribution Research
commenced with the Summer 2000 semester. As part of the introduction of
bachelor's and master's degree programs in the Winter 2007/2008 semester, Trade
Fair Management became established as a profile group. Students gain a
comprehensive overview of careers in the exhibition industry through lectures,
exercises and practice-based research projects. The profile group offers an
opportunity for specialization to students within the Faculty of Management,
Economics and Social Sciences, who must attend two selected profile groups as
part of their bachelor's degree programme. Concurrently, degree candidates who
commenced their university studies prior to the introduction of the new
bachelor's/master's degree programs can obtain academic training in Trade Fair
Management as an elective subject. In addition to bachelor's degree studies,
students can also write their thesis and/or dissertation work at the Institute.
As
the interface between theory and practice in the exhibition industry, the
Institute pursues basic and applied research and promotes the incorporation of
scientific findings into real world business practices. In November 2004, for
example, it conducted the first European benchmark study on trade fair
companies, and presented its findings at the Congress of the Global Association
of the Exhibition Industry (UFI) in Bangkok.
Since
August 2006, the Institute of Trade Fair Management and Distribution Research
has run the Summer University for Trade Fair Management (ISU) in joint
cooperation with UFI. This intensive seminar, which is geared toward executive
managers in the exhibition industry, offers continuing education in
exhibition-focused topics; yet above all, it is an ideal forum for the exchange
of ideas among colleagues and experts from throughout the globe.
